FAQ
Questions, answered.
What is the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery?
A US government program that gives up to 55,000 immigrant visas (Green Cards) a year to people from countries that send few immigrants to the United States. Entries are picked at random by computer. If you’re selected, your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can come with you.
Am I eligible?
Two things. You must be born in an eligible country (Nepal has been on the list in recent years), or claim one through your spouse or a parent. And you need a high-school education or its equivalent, or two years in the last five in a job that needs at least two years of training. The official instructions for each year have the full list.
Is the DV Lottery free to enter?
Not any more. From DV-2027, every entry has a $1 fee paid to the US government. Anyone who asks for more than that is charging for their own service, not the government’s. If you’re selected, there are separate visa fees later, paid to the US government at your interview.
Why do I need help with the application?
You don’t have to have it, but small mistakes disqualify entries without any warning: a photo that breaks the rules, a spouse or child left off, or two entries for the same person. You only find out by not being selected. We check every field and every photo before anything is sent.
What does DVcompass do, and what does it cost?
With DVcompass Standard ($1.99, the $1 government fee included), you fill in your form, we check it and your photos, and we submit your entry for you. You type the security code yourself, and nothing is sent until you say so. DVcompass Expert ($4.99) adds a 15-minute call with one of our experts. See pricing.
How will I know if I'm selected?
Only through the official Entrant Status Check on dvprogram.state.gov, with your confirmation number. Nobody, including us, can tell you that you won; anyone who emails or calls to say so is lying. For DV-2027, results are due by Dec 3, 2026. We keep your confirmation number safe and remind you when to check.
What if my visa application is denied?
The consular officer tells you why at the interview. Some refusals only mean a document is missing, and you can send it before the visa year ends. Others are final for that year. Every DV visa must be issued by September 30 of the program year, so there’s no carrying over. You can still enter again the next year if you’re eligible. For a refusal, talk to an immigration lawyer; we’re not lawyers.
Are you the US government?
No. DVcompass is an independent service. The only official entry website is dvprogram.state.gov, and the official instructions are on travel.state.gov.
